MISSION STATEMENTCherry Hill Church, unified by the word of God, proclaims God's love, forgiveness of sin, grace and salvation. We are a united community with diverse spiritual gifts, brought together by God to learn, grow, nurture and pray for one another and to share in worship and the sacraments under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God calls us to share compassionately and generously with others all He has given to us. SESSION COMMITTEESThe programs at Cherry Hill are divided among specific session committees, which are responsible for studying and recommending to session, specific policies and programs that will meet the needs of the congregation. Cherry Hill's congregation is divided into 34 geographic districts served by deacons, who are each elected by the congregation to serve three year terms. Their responsibility is to stay in regular contact with each church family. In addition to providing support and help to members, deacons also keep pastor informed of the special needs and concerns of our members. To review the list of Deacons, click here. PRESBYTERIAN POLITYThe Presbyterian Church polity or government is comprised of the four groups: Session, Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. Session: The session is the governing body of each local church, and is comprised of the pastor who moderates the session and the elders in active service. The elders are elected by the congregation to serve three year terms. It is the duty of the session to provide for the spiritual welfare of the congregation. The session has responsibility for the mission and programs of the congregation providing leadership to guide God's people as they continually seek to discover what God is doing in the world. Presbytery: A regional group of Presbyterian congregations consisting of the minister and elder delegates from the congregations within its boundaries. We are a member of the Detroit Presbytery. Its purpose is to provide for the welfare of its member churches; to nurture pastors and their families; to organize new churches as needed; to minister to community needs and contribute to the world-wide mission of the PCUSA; to prepare candidates for ministry; to examine and ordain ministers. Synod: A regional group of presbyteries consisting of delegates, ministers and elders from each presbytery. Its purpose is to develop and implement regional mission projects, services and programs; to guide and assist its member presbyteries; to co-ordinate and oversee their work; to organize or reorganize synods as needed. General Assembly: Its purpose is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and bear witness of his love to the world; to preserve the truth; to promote peace and justice; to set priorities and strategies for the work of the church; to develop and implement objectives for national and international mission; to administer and govern the PCUSA; to provide it with programs and resources; to oversee the work of the synods. THE LECTIONARYThe Presbyterian Church follows the Revised Common Lectionary for their liturgical resource. The Scriptural references for the Lectionary for Sundays and Festivals are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary prepared by the Consultation on Common Texts. The Consultation is a forum for liturgical renewal among many of the major Christian churches of North America. To review the Lectionary at the PCUSA web site, cliick here.
